Latest & Greatest:

Inspired by the close working relationship among product, process and craftsman, Great Dane’s theme for Saturday in Design is Materiality: Make, Create, Play.

Benjamin Hubert, Saturday in Design’s only international guest, will be leading workshops about his process and materials at 11 am and 3pm on Saturday, August 20 in the Great Dane showroom. The young and energetic English industrial designer is known for pushing boundaries yet maintaining a simple and organic aesthetic.

The process is often just as intriguing as the end product: local artisans will be papercording by hand and creating cork jewellery, inspired by Hubert’s Float light.. These tactile experiences will be an opportunity for guests to see firsthand the time and effort that goes into producing products by hand.

The day will begin with a traditional smoking ceremony by Uncle Max, a local indigenous elder, to honour Redfern’s roots.

A pop-up farmers market featuring producers from the Eveleigh Market will provide high-quality food with an emphasis on freshness and local sourcing.

At 1pm, Great Dane will draw a winner for a two-night stay at Southern Ocean Lodge in Kangaroo Island (valued at more than $5000).

Featured Brand

A collaboration of materials, process and simplicity.  Born in the UK in 1984, Benjamin Hubert studied Industrial Design and Technology at Loughborough University and graduated in 2006.

The London based studio was founded shortly afterwards in 2007 and specializes in industrial design across furniture and lighting sectors working with international manufacturers across Europe and Asia. The studio works on a diverse range of projects including both mass/batch produced consumer products and limited edition/one offs. Benjamin Hubert has received international critical and media acclaim and has been exhibited internationally.

Benjamin has also received a number of prestigious awards including: Design of the year (British Design awards 2010) Best Product (100% design/Blueprint awards 2009) Homes and Gardens Young Designer of the Year (Design Classic Awards 2010) and EDIDA International Young Designer of the Year 2010.

At first glance, the relationship between an English industrial lighting designer in London and a Scandinavian design emporium in Australia seems unlikely—yet a shared design aesthetic brought them together.

Product Discovery

MUNDO which means ‘Mouth’ in Danish started as a stackable chair created by Danish designer Susanne Grønlund.  The chair provides exceptional comfort due to the shell’s geometry, which is based on the inherent traits of the wood and provides strength, lightness and flexibility. The chair is unusual in that it both continues and refreshes the Scandinavian design tradition, while also adding a touch of humour.  The MUNDO stacking chair is available in oak, oak black, walnut and makassar, and in lime and white glossy laminate. The frame is available in polished and matt chrome.

The MUNDO Bar stool was later designed in 2008 to compliment the stacking chair.  It is available in oak, walnut and makassar, and in lime and white glossy laminate. The frame is available in polished and matt chrome.
