Soborg Chair

Being a very contemporary design, the SØBORG chair bridges contrasts, between industrial and handcrafted solutions, the textural properties of solid wood, plywood and steel and between a lightweight and solidly grounded expression.

In the late 1940’s, Børge Mogensen started to explore working with moulded plywood. After presenting an experimental shell chair in 1949 he chose to unite the plywood with his signatue functionalism based on cabinetmaker’s principles and rigid aesthetics.

The result was the SØBORG chair with wooden frame – a chair that was presented first in 1950. The Søborg-chair was designed with the intention to make a shell chair that could be produced with new machinery of the times. The generous seat and back design, in Mogensen’s favourite materials, was the beginning of a shape seen in works throughout the rest of his career.

FREDERICIA relaunched the SØBORG chairs in 2014 to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of Børge Mogensen’s birth. In line with Mogensen’s original ambition with the series, we have updated the features of the chair for contemporary production and lifestyle.
